From Fenestrelle, Italy

The Fort of Fenestrelle, known as "The Great Piedmontese Wall", has a total surface area of 1,350,000 m² and stretches for over 3 kilometers along a difference in height of about 635 meters. The longest of its internal stairs is called the "covered staircase", consisting of about 4,000 steps, 2.10 meters wide and 2.35 meters high, with walls and a vaulted arch 2 meters thick. This staircase connects the entire fortress from the valleys to the top. Originally designed for mules, it has steps that are very uncomfortable for people but allowed the soldiers stationed in the forts to receive ammunition and food. The rations, prepared in the kitchen down the valley, consisted of 7 ounces of black bread in a mess tin with broth made from scraps, red beets and leftover meat.
